First Serve: Introducing Tennis to Collingwood’s Youth
First Serve is a community initiative led by the Collingwood Tennis Club that introduces Grade 4 students to the sport of tennis through fun, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate instruction. Delivered during the school day, the program removes common barriers to participation and gives students the opportunity to experience tennis in a welcoming, supportive environment.
Each participating class receives free lessons over several weeks in the spring, held at the Town of Collingwood’s outdoor tennis courts at Kinsmen Park. Lessons are taught by the Club’s Head Professional and focus on fundamental tennis skills such as grip, footwork, strokes, serving, basic rules, and game play. Just as importantly, First Serve emphasizes sportsmanship, confidence, teamwork, and physical literacy.
All equipment — including racquets and balls — is provided by the Collingwood Tennis Club and our generous sponsors, and there is no cost to students or families. The program is designed to be inclusive and accessible, with activities adapted to support students of varying abilities and experience levels. Transportation is coordinated by participating schools.
First Serve reflects the Collingwood Tennis Club’s commitment to growing the game locally while supporting youth development and community connection. By introducing tennis at an early age, the program aims to spark interest in lifelong physical activity and help students see tennis as a sport they can continue to enjoy within our community.
The Collingwood Tennis Club is proud to work alongside local schools, community partners, and sponsors to make First Serve possible and looks forward to expanding the program to reach more students in the years ahead.
