Notes from Coach Howie regarding Social Tennis:

Social tennis or recreational play represents one of the hubs of a well functioning tennis facility.  (Competitive match play, free play , member events, and coaching programs are some of the best examples of other keys to a successful club)

Social tennis may be facilitated through random play match ups or use of some type of streaming system designed to create better social match play.

While random match play seems more equitable on the surface, the gap in skills of the participants is more exposed in this system, and often the higher level players are less motivated to participate due to the absence of fun points during this choice  of play structure.

When using a streaming system, the concept revolves around the concept of applying the "10% rule" when arranging fun match up recreational play.  Players are aligned with the goal of creating foursomes that are all within a 10%  skill level of each other.  This will facilitate more rallies and fun points for the various groups participating, and will likely enhance the longevity and health of any social tennis program.

In any tennis match play, the interest of the individuals will always trend to playing "up", meaning a desire to match up with better players.  There is little incentive at the club level to play "down", or voluntarily play with lesser players, because ALL individual players are looking to locate the best possible game for themselves.

Better players are expected to adjust their expectations during social play time, and developing players should recognize the needs of the group when participating in mixed level tennis play.  Developing players also have the ongoing option of increasing personal practice or receiving coaching to facilitate their development outside of the social play opportunity.
