Historical Timeline

1885 - South Cowichan on Vancouver Island lays out 2 grass tennis courts. 


1887  - The SCLTC was founded.


1888 The first Vancouver Island Tournament was held at The SCLTC.


1901 - The Northwest Circuit of the Pacific Northwest champions draws players from California to play on various surfaces before heading East for the National Championships. Oregon State, Tacoma, and Jericho were on clay court; Seattle was hard court, Vancouver, Victoria and South Cowichan were on grass.


1906  - The SCLTC courts and pavilion were built on their new and present day location.


1907 -  The official opening of the club’s new location. George Treffy Corfield’s donated land in 1907 where it continues to serve the community today.  


1919 - The following clubs joined the USLTA: Spokane Tennis Club, North Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club, South Cowichan Lawn Tennis Club, and the Laurel Tennis club in Vancouver.


1926 - The club was officially named the South Cowichan Lawn Tennis Club in the Societies Act Certificate 


1947 - The North Pacific International Championships were begun and were played yearly at different member clubs until 1920. In 1921 the tournament was  renamed the Pacific NorthWest Sectionals and continued to be played around the Northwest until 1947 when it found a permanent home at South Cowichan.


1950During the 1950s, the SCLTC underwent numerous revitalization and construction projects, including revitalization of the courts and building a new modern clubhouse with a fireplace, modern kitchen and indoor plumbing.


1962 - The club’s 75th Jubilee was celebrated and the new clubhouse was completed.


1987 - The 100th anniversary was celebrated with international players and special guests.   The celebrations lasted for a week and were attended by competitors from five continents. The Centennial celebrations were a great success marked by attendance of local dignitaries and representatives from Wimbledon itself.


1992  - The SCLTC received Heritage Designation status from the Province of British Columbia.


1992  - Davis Cup practice was hosted at SCLTC. 


2012  - SCLTC hosted the 125th anniversary celebration.


2017 - In the July 2017 edition of the publication TennisHead, The SCLTC was named one of the six best grass tennis clubs in the world outside of Great Britain. 


2019 - Daniel Nestor, world’s number 1 ranked doubles player in 2002, 2004 and 2008 and Olympic Gold Medalist, played an exhibition event and held a two day clinic at SCLTC to support junior tennis on Vancouver Island, and across Canada. 


2022 - Out of the four existing lawn tennis clubs in Canada (Toronto, Prince Edward Island, Vancouver and SCLTC), Tennis Canada named the SCLTC as being “one of the best and longest-serving grass-court facilities…”.
