An Unbiased ;) Review of the WTC Mixed Doubles "Trash Talk" Tournament on August 25, 2024

The first Mixed Doubles Tournament of the season happened on Sunday, August 25, and we had a great turnout of 7 teams playing one superset to 8 and included several people that had not played in previous tournaments. It was a fun day with lots of great matches!
The food and prize committees went wild, going a full $2 over the allotted budget (mainly for chips!), and bringing in some big-ticket prizes (described below) for the top three teams.
The teams were:
1. Steve Ledrew/Lisa Maj-Roos
2. Paul Morgan/Nancy Price
3. Guy Chamberlain/Anne MacKinnon
4. Heather MacArthur/Glenn McMullen
5. Pam Hickman/BJ Parnell
6. Kelly Miller/Allan Miller
7. Rebecca Smith/Wil van Gestel
The final results and PRIZES (with attached team photos!) were:
1. Heather MacArthur/Glenn McMullen (First Place)
Prize: Mutant (likely genetically modified) and oddly shaped Zucchini from an undisclosed garden location
Team Quote of the tournament: “We owe all our success to one person and that person is Carol D'Entremont (for dropping out of the tournament-- with a side thank you to the rather easily bribable NS Tennis Open scheduling team!)” - Glenn & Heather
2. Pam Hickman/BJ “Cinnamon Buns” Parnell (Second Place)
Prize: Presidents Choice Shakshuka Chakchouka Morrocan sauce (15-months past the "safe to eat" expiry date)
Team quote of the tournament: "Are you sure that 15-month expired sauce is safe to eat?" – BJ
3. Nancy Price/Paul Morgan (Third Place)
Prize: Glenn's REALLY old tennis balls (3 pack - brand name "unidentifiable" due to fading)
Team quote of the tournament: “We’ll be signing copies of our team photo at the next club fundraiser-- winning third place and looking great are not mutually exclusive!” - Paul
There were many tough battles fought and the (hyper)tension was enhanced by the diabolical BJ as he tried to lure the competition into a rabbit hole of freshly baked warm (Yes WARM!) cinnamon buns in his desperate effort to reduce his team’s competition into a pre-diabetic heap of cinnamon-laced sweat. Alas, in the end, he failed to account for the fact that he also ate 4 of those delicious creations before he even left his house
Pictured above: BJ proudly displaying his team’s spoils of victory - literally!
Heather MacArthur/Glenn McMullen (yep - that's the zuchinni prize you can't "unsee"!)
Paul Morgan/Nancy Price (3rd place)
Post-Tournament highlights:
Despite plenty of within-team trash talk at the “Trash Talk Open,” Alan and Kelly have confirmed they are still a couple post-tournament, proving that their banter skills are just as strong as their rallying skills!
This event has now set the bar for 2025! You can fully expect this tournament to be repeated next year and our commitment to you is that the prizes will be worse, there will be way more insults, and the boutique flavoured chip budget will see a substantial increase!
THANKS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED AND CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS.
