Our Stories

Anyone for tennis, tennis for everyone!

We started the tennis club in Kentville in 2025 and have been encouraged by the support from the community. We want to provide a safe and fun environment for everyone!! It is our hope that if we work together and respect each other, we can grow the club to be open to everyone regardless of your abilities.

Michael

I have enjoyed different kinds of sporting activities, having been active in things like golf, curling and dragon boating. When I retired and moved to Nova Scotia in 2021, I started playing tennis and since then have grown to really enjoy it. Tennis ended up being harder than I thought, there are a lot of different components in the sport: how they make those shots on television is amazing! But I really enjoy the challenge and the fun of learning and competing with others on the court. I took both my instructors course and my wheelchair instructors’ course in 2025. I am pleased and proud that wheelchair tennis is part of our club, and both Chris and I are looking for ways to promote it in the Valley. This is the second club that Chris and I have organised and it is very exciting to bring a tennis club back to Kentville.

Chris

I grew up in southern England and started hitting tennis balls against a brick wall from the age of 7. It was one of my favourite things to do. As I got older tennis was one of the sports that I loved to play, and continued playing until the age of 40. At that time I was diagnosed with MS which was further complicated as I struggled with arthritis in major joints in my body. It was very frustrating no longer being able to run around a court. When we moved to Nova Scotia in 2021, I was extremely excited to find out that I could take lessons in wheelchair tennis. I found it very challenging, but loved taking the lessons and I have been using a tennis sport chair ever since. I am very glad to once again be playing tennis, and have competed twice in the Nova Scotia Open and proud to have placed second in singles in 2023.

Head Coach

Sunny

I came to this country in 2016 and moved to Nova Scotia in 2021. I have over 8 years of business experience working with organizations across various industries, but what I really enjoy is being on a tennis court! I have been a coach for a few years, and participated in a number of tournaments across Atlantic Canada. I am very competitive, but also a very committed coach and try to always do my best for all my players. Having my Instructor, Club Professional 1 (CP1) and wheelchair coaching certifications allow me to enjoy all aspects of lessons and teaching children and adults. I am very happy to be part of Kentville Tennis Club, and along with Chris and Michael to promoting a safe, friendly, welcoming, respectful atmosphere on court, and looking forward to the coming season!!

Coach

Maureen

I have been playing tennis since I was seven years old. I first learned the game with my family, and it quickly became something I truly loved. In high school, I played varsity and was fortunate enough to earn a full scholarship through tennis. Competing for my school taught me a lot about hard work, discipline, and teamwork, and I’ve carried those lessons with me ever since. I continued to play recreationally through college and beyond. I’m really excited to step into coaching in Kentville and share the game that’s been such a big part of my life. My goal as your coach is to help you build confidence, enjoy the process, and develop a strong foundation in both skill and mindset. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to improve your game, I’m here to guide you, challenge you, and make sure we have fun along the way!
