Our Story

Project Background

The idea and the initial group formed in 2016. It began with a coach whose dream was to have a centre of his very own, and an Edmonton businessman who discovered a personal passion for tennis fifteen years ago, when it transformed his health for the better. The idea of building their own centre was floated casually at first, but in 2021-22 the project became more clearly defined: IQ Tennis and Pickleball Centre was registered as an NPO in Alberta, and the core IQ Team garnered the support of the City of Edmonton by identifying a huge demand for indoor tennis and pickleball facilities in the city and surrounding areas.

For example, as of 2022 when IQTPC sent a proposal to the City, availability for public indoor tennis specific courts in Calgary was 21 (1 per 76K), Red Deer was 4 (1 per 25 K), and Edmonton was 17 (1 per 100K)

As for Edmonton’s existing, mostly private tennis clubs, they continue to operate at capacity into 2025, and provide only very limited access for the general public.

Then there is pickleball: the fastest growing sport in Canada, and Alberta is the province with the highest number of registered pickleball players in the country. As of 2022, there were only 18 indoor, pickleball-specific courts in Edmonton.

And the story continues...

Following the Expression of Interest project proposal to the City of Edmonton, IQ Tennis & Pickleball Centre was chosen to explore the positive impact to the Meadowlark community in covering the existing tennis courts at Jasper Place with an air-supported dome, to offer Edmontonians an opportunity to enjoy tennis and pickleball year-round. IQTPC is now in close contact with many stakeholders in the community, including the surrounding K-12 schools, and has the support of Tennis Canada, Rogers Communication, as well as the Province of Alberta to bring the centre to life.

One last thing...

Our Coaches Make Our Centre

Fuelled by an overwhelming passion for both sports which keeps them on the courts at all hours of the day, our coaching team at IQ will be emphasizing competitive, daily junior programming (red, orange, green, and yellow) for all the families and schools in the Meadowlark area. But they won't stop there!  For all players in the community, of all ages and skillsets, our coaches are working hard to design accessible development pathways so that anyone at our centre has the ability to pick up a racquet and discover for themselves the joy and transformation of these sports!
