The Newsletter

Each month, we update this newsletter that describes our Learn to Play Tennis activities for the month. The newsletter gives the location of the Learn to Play Tennis lessons, as well as days, times and costs.

The South Cowichan Lawn Tennis Club is seasonal and operates from mid May until mid September.  Read this newsletter for the Learn to Play Tennis Camps and lessons that we offer at the club.

Arbutus Tennis and Golf Club operates an indoor tennis facility year round. Read this newsletter for the Learn to Play Tennis activities that we offer at Arbutus Ridge.

Many tennis students participate in lessons at Arbutus Ridge during the winter and then switch to learning tennis in the tennis camps offered at SCLTC. Although it is not necessary to join the club to participate in the tennis camps, many students become members. There is no additional charge for student membership when parents or grandparents are club members. Please refer to the membership page.

October 2020 newsletter

Hi all,

We are very excited to have our Learn to Play Tennis Lessons at Arbutus Ridge Tennis Bubble.

Schedule and Fees

Please note:

  • New times and fees for each month. Each lesson is for one and a half hours.
  • For Saturday lessons, the first lesson begins at 11:00 and ends at 12:25, not 12:30. And the second lesson begins at 12:35 and ends at 2:00. The time between 12:25 and 12:35 ensures that all students in the first group are out of the bubble before any students from the second group arrive. It also gives us time to clean in between the lessons.
  • Fees are $25.00 per hour with maximum 4 students per coach. Each 1.5 hour lesson costs $37.50. Fees include Arbutus Ridge court fees, taxes, equipment as required, and coaches.

Your Safety

We appreciate your continuing support in ensuring your children's safety while having their tennis lessons.

Prior to the lesson

  • Have your children wait outside of the bubble until a coach greets them for the start of the lesson. They should physically distance. We will ask them the standard COVID questions.
  • Have them use the hand sanitizer outside the bubble.
  • Please do not enter the bubble yourself. The coffee shop and washrooms are open in the main building.

Inside the bubble and during the lesson

  • Students use hand sanitizer in the foyer of the bubble.
  • Students participate in a group of 4 with one coach for the entire lesson. The coach and group members will not change during the lesson, but could change from one lesson to the next.
  • Students use only their personal water bottles.
  • Students touch racquets when saying thankyou. They do not high - five, hug, or shake hands.

|At the end of the lesson

  • Students immediately leave the lesson. They will not visit with each other.
  • On their way out, students sanitize their hands both in the foyer and outside the door of the bubble.
  • You meet them outside immediately following the lesson.

Registration

Please register as soon as possible. There is a maximum of 12 students per lesson (4 students per court and coach).

To register, please email me with the following information:

September 2020 newsletter

Hi all,

You are part of a bcc list.

Thank you for a great summer

Thank you to all students, parents and guardians, and coaches for a wonderful safe and enjoyable summer of tennis lessons and camps. We thank all of you for your thoughtful and dedicated attention to following the COVID-19 safety procedures put in place for our lessons. We will continue to work together to ensure that we maintain physical distancing, wash and sanitize our hands, use our own equipment, and touch racquets rather than shaking hands, high-fiving or hugging.

We also thank South Cowichan Lawn Tennis Club (SCLTC) and Arbutus Ridge Tennis for opening their courts to us during this summer.

There are many many young players in our area now. These include 55 students who participated in our Learn to Play Tennis camps at SCLTC and 80 who participated in the Tennis and Golf Camps at Arbutus Ridge.

September plans

For the month of September, please set up tennis lessons directly with Art and cc to me. This will ensure that your children can safely continue their lessons at times that work for you. We know that some children will be available during week days for lessons. If you prefer to have your children in a group of 4, and have fewer than those numbers, we will do our best to have additional children who would work well in the group.

Costs for lessons

  • 4 students (maximum per court) - $25.00 each per hour
  • 3 students - $30.00 each per hour
  • 2 students - $40.00 each per hour
  • 1 student - $70.00 per hour

Anticipated plans for October and beyond

We anticipate that we will offer regular group lessons at Arbutus Ridge with 4 participants per court in October. In addition, you can always set up lessons with Art.

Our Learn to Play Tennis Program and Junior Coaching Program support the BC Physical and Health Education Curriculum

We follow the Tennis Canada curriculum. At your request, we will provide you and your school, full descriptions of the knowledge, skills and understandings that your children learn and apply through our tennis programs. Please give the grade level and describe requirements to meet the needs of your school Physical and Health Education Programs.

We will respond in relation to the four curricular competencies described in the BC Physical and Health Education Curriculum:

  • Physical Literacy  - for example, how the student demonstrates fundamental movement skills such as jumping, throwing, as well as how the student demonstrates safety, fair play and leadership in our tennis activities
  • Healthy and active living - for example, how the student pursues healthy living such as following the COVID health recommendations, warming up properly, staying hydrated
  • Social and community health - for example, how the student applies strategies for developing healthy relationships with coaches and students in our lessons (teams, partners, collaborative play)
  • Mental well-being - for example, how the student describes and applies strategies for promoting well-being (positive outlook) in our lessons

Thanks. There is nothing better than seeing your children making friends, performing at an appropriate level of challenge, actively participating, improving, and having fun!
